Who Is Dr Jaz Gulati and What Is the Protrusive Dental Podcast?

Dr Jaz Gulati is a London-based general dentist, dental educator, and the founder and host of the Protrusive Dental Podcast. Since December 2018, Protrusive has published hundreds of episodes and is ranked in the top 1% of podcasts worldwide by Listen Notes (October 2026) and named the #1 UK dental podcast by FeedSpot, with listeners in over 190 countries.

Protrusive brings dentists together to explore clinical dentistry, patient communication and life in practice. Protrusive Guidance is the community platform that takes that learning further with educational resources and community support.

Ever finished a clinical day with a question still going round in your head? Hearing another dentist’s reasoning can help you work out what to explore next.

That’s a useful way to approach Protrusive: bring a question, listen to the discussion and decide what you need to learn next.

What is Jaz Gulati’s dental background?

Jaz qualified from the University of Sheffield in 2013 with a BDS with honours and distinction in his clinical examinations. During his time at university, he was the President of Sheffield University Dental Students’ Society. He went on to become the first student in Sheffield history to achieve 100% in a Clinical Finals exam.

He subsequently completed Dental Core Training in restorative dentistry at Guy’s Hospital and then at Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, and worked in private practice in Singapore.

Jaz now practises at The Richmond Dentist in South-West London.

His published qualifications include BDS (Hons.), MFDS (Glas), PgCert (DentEd) and PgDip (Orthodontics). His clinical interests include ortho-restorative dentistry, occlusion and the conservative management of temporomandibular disorders, or TMD.

He is one of the few dentists in the UK who is Disclusion Time Reduction (DTR) certified, having been taught by Dr Robert Kerstein. He uses T-Scan and Bio-EMG technology in his London clinic (Richmond). He passed his DTR exam with 90% (only 6 dentists have achieved this in the last 10 years, as of 2025).

Jaz has won multiple prizes and awards listed below.

Jaz Gulati as an International Speaker and Dental Educator

Dr Jaz Gulati has established his reputation as an energetic and engaging keynote speaker. He has delivered presentations and workshops in the USA, Scandinavia, Spain and Switzerland. His commitment to his young family means most of his teaching is online and locally within the UK.

His teaching includes practical occlusion and dental splints. For a general dentist, that means exploring questions you recognise from the surgery: what should you assess, how should you plan, and what does your restorative decision mean for the patient’s occlusion?

Inside Protrusive Guidance, Jaz teaches online courses on:

  • Onlays and Overlays
  • Vertical Preparation
  • Sectioning and Elevating for Extractions
  • Rubber Dam Isolation
  • Resin Bonded Bridges
  • Occlusal Splints/Appliances
  • Dental Photography
  • Dental Ergonomics (assisting Dr Aniko Ball)

Alongside his online teaching, Jaz runs two in-person, hands-on courses with Dr Mahmoud Ibrahim. Bulletproof is the foundation course. It gives dentists a practical, risk-based system for occlusion in everyday restorative dentistry, from faster crown fits to clearer lab prescriptions, and assumes no prior occlusion training. Unchippable applies those principles to the front teeth, teaching dentists to create composite edge bonding, veneers and Dahl cases that look good and last. Both courses combine online pre-course learning with a weekend of hands-on work on articulated models taken from real patients Jaz and Mahmoud have treated.

Why did Jaz start the Protrusive Dental Podcast?

The podcast began at the end of 2018 with a practical question to answer. After returning to the UK from Singapore, Jaz was regularly hearing from dentists considering the same move. Recording the answers meant more people could benefit from the conversation.

The first episode was “Expat Dentist in Singapore!” The show then developed a strong clinical focus, bringing in guests to discuss dentistry and their approaches to practice.

The podcast grew from something familiar: dentists asking another dentist for help. That’s a starting point for listeners.

What topics does Protrusive cover?

The catalogue includes restorative dentistry, occlusion, tooth wear, cracked teeth, extractions and treatment planning. You’ll also find discussions about explaining treatment, communicating risks and fees, and managing conversations with patients.

You’ll recognise how these subjects overlap in the surgery. You can understand the treatment options and still struggle to explain them clearly. Listen with both questions in mind: what would you consider clinically, and how would you talk it through with the patient?

The Interference Cast explores broader, largely non-clinical subjects, including wellbeing, careers and working relationships. Dentistry takes up a lot of headspace! Sometimes the question you need help with is about the person holding the handpiece.

Who is the podcast for?

Protrusive is for dentists and other dental professionals who want to keep learning. General dentists can explore topics relevant to everyday practice. Students and early-career clinicians can start with discussions that match their knowledge and build from there.

You don’t need to work through the entire catalogue. Start with a question you already have, whether it’s about cracked teeth or explaining treatment options.

Experienced clinician? Listen for the reasoning and compare it with your own. A useful episode might challenge an assumption or help you explain a decision you already made.

Where can you listen or watch?

Browse episodes on the Protrusive website, listen through Apple Podcasts or Spotify, or watch available video versions through Protrusive’s YouTube channel.

Looking for a starting point? Try “Understanding Cracked Tooth Syndrome and the Dental Occlusion Triad” if cracked teeth are relevant to your learning. Otherwise, search the catalogue for the question that’s on your mind.

How does Protrusive Guidance fit in?

Protrusive Guidance extends the podcast’s learning through member resources, clinical walkthroughs, masterclasses and community discussion. Its educational resources include SplintCourse; check current membership inclusions and access terms when choosing a plan.

Community matters here. If an episode leaves you with a question, you have somewhere to discuss it with fellow dentists. Talking through what you’re learning can help you see another perspective and decide what to explore next.

Want that combination of educational content and ongoing discussion? Explore Protrusive Guidance. Start with a learning need you can name, then check whether the resources fit.
